Strong horizontal photospheric magnetic field in a surface dynamo simulation

چکیده
Context. Observations with the Hinode spectro-polarimeter have revealed strong horizontal internetwork magnetic fields in the quiet solar photosphere. Aims. We aim at interpreting the observations by means of results from numerical simulations. Methods. Radiative MHD simulations of dynamo action by near-surface convection are analyzed with respect to the relation between vertical and horizontal magnetic field components. Results. The dynamo-generated fields show a clear dominance of the horizontal field in the height range where the spectral lines used for the observations are formed. The ratio between the averaged horizontal and vertical field components is consistent with the values derived from the observations. This behavior results from the intermittent nature of the dynamo field with polarity mixing on small scales in the surface layers. Conclusions. Our results provide further evidence that local near-surface dynamo action contributes significantly to the solar internetwork fields.

Surface flux concentrations in a spherical α2 dynamo
Context. In the presence of strong density stratification, turbulence can lead to the large-scale instability of a horizontal magnetic field if its strength is in a suitable range (around a few percent of the turbulent equipartition value). This instability is related to a suppression of the turbulent pressure so that the turbulent contribution to the mean magnetic pressure becomes negative. Th...

Context. The mean-field theory of magnetized stellar convection gives rise to two distinct instabilities: the large-scale dynamo instability, operating in the bulk of the convection zone and a negative effective magnetic pressure instability (NEMPI) operating in the strongly stratified surface layers. The latter might be important in connection with magnetic spot formation. However, as follows ...
متن کاملReversals of the solar magnetic dipole in the light of observational data and simple dynamo models
Context. Observations show that the photospheric solar magnetic dipole usually does not vanish during the reversal of the solar magnetic field, which occurs in each solar cycle. In contrast, mean-field solar dynamo models predict that the dipole field does become zero. In a recent paper it was suggested that this contradiction could be explained as a large-scale manifestation of small-scale mag...
متن کاملFrom fibril to diffuse fields during dynamo saturation
The degree of intermittency of the magnetic field of a large-scale dynamo is considered. Based on simulations it is argued that there is a tendency for the field to become more diffuse and non-intermittent as the dynamo saturates. The simulations are idealized in that the turbulence is strongly helical and shear is strong, so the tendency for the field to become more diffuse is somewhat exagger...
متن کاملMHD simulation of electric currents in the solar atmosphere caused by photospheric plasma motion
Photospheric plasma motion may cause the buildup of electric currents in the solar atmosphere. These electric currents may then dissipate and heat the corona, cause EUV and X-ray Bright Points (BPs) and trigger flares. In this work we use a ‘data driven’ 3D MHD model to study the generation of electric currents in the solar atmosphere by photospheric plasma motion. The model was applied to phot...
